Happy birthday, Elizabeth Heyrick (Dec. 4, 1769 – Oct. 18, 1831)! #Quaker. #Pacifist. #Abolitionist. Artist. Schoolteacher. Advocate for prison reform. Opponent of capital punishment. Prolific pamphleteer. Founding member of the Anti-Slavery Society in 1823. Author of “Immediate, not Gradual Abolition, or An Inquiry Into the Shortest, Safest, and Most Effectual Means of Getting Rid of West Indian Slavery” (1824), a pamphlet which influenced many in England and the U.S. Born and died in Leicester, England. Originally buried in the Gallowtree Gate Congregational Chapel churchyard. Her remains were moved in 1923 to the Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester.
