Happy birthday, Prudence Crandall (Sept. 3, 1803 – Jan. 28, 1890)! Born into a Rhode Island #Quaker family. #Abolitionist. #Pacifist. Educator. In 1833 she established the first school for African-American girls in the U.S., an act which generated violent opposition. The school building, in Canterbury, Connecticut, still stands and now houses the Prudence Crandall Museum. Born in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. Died in Elk Falls, Kansas. Buried in Elk Falls Cemetery.
