Happy birthday, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (Aug. 28, 1825 – July 14, 1895)! German writer. Graduated in law and theology from Gottingen University in 1846. Viewed today as the pioneer of the modern gay rights movement. In 1862 he “came out” to family and friends, and from then on spoke openly in defense of persons with same-sex attraction. Quotable quote: “Until my dying day I will look back with pride that I found the courage to come face to face in battle against the spectre which for time immemorial has been injecting poison into me and into men of my nature.” Author of “Research on the Riddle of Man-Manly Love” (1879), among other works. Ulrichs was forgotten for many years, but recently has become a cult figure in Europe.
