Happy birthday, Benjamin Ferris (Aug. 7, 1780 – Nov. 9, 1867)! ‪#‎Quaker‬. Skeptic. Watchmaker. First Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite). Advocate for the “spirit of free inquiry.” Rejected religious creeds and doctrines. In 1821-1823 he published a debate with an evangelical minister, entitled “Letters of Paul and Amicus.” Author of “History of the Original Settlements on the Delaware: From its Discovery by Hudson to the Colonization under William Penn” (1846). Born and died in Wilmington, Delaware. Buried in the Friends Meeting House Burial Ground, Wilmington.
