Happy birthday, Marie Equi (April 7, 1872 – July 13, 1952)! ‪#‎Pacifist‬. ‪#‎Suffragist‬. ‪#‎Anarchist‬. Anti-war activist. Labor rights activist. Pediatrician. Openly lesbian. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Died in Portland, Oregon. During an anti-war demonstration in downtown Portland she carried a banner reading “Prepare to die, workingmen … J.P. Morgan & Co. want preparedness for profit.” A small riot ensued and she was arrested. In 1918 she was convicted of sedition for her anti-war work and served a year in San Quentin. During the 1920s Marie became a close friend and associate of I.W.W. leader Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. Marie’s remains are in the Portland Memorial Mausoleum.
