Happy birthday, Matilda Joslyn Gage (March 24, 1826 – March 18, 1898)!‪#‎Suffragist‬. ‪#‎Abolitionist‬. Freethinker. Advocate for Native American rights. Critic of the Christian church for oppression of women. Editor of “The National Citizen & Ballot Box” newspaper (1878-1881). Founder in 1890 of the Woman’s National Liberal Union (WNLU) for radical activists in the women’s movement. Author of “Woman, Church and State” (1893). Gage was cremated, but there is a memorial stone in the Fayetteville Cemetery, Fayetteville, New York, that bears her slogan: “There is a word sweeter than Mother, Home, or Heaven. That word is Liberty.”
