Happy birthday, Victor L. Berger (Feb. 28, 1860 – Aug. 7, 1929)! ‪#‎Socialist‬. Labor organizer. Anti-militarist. Teacher. Editor. Founding member of the Social Democratic Party of America (1898), and later the Socialist Party of America (1901). Elected in 1910 to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first Socialist member of Congress (representing Wisconsin’s 5th CD). In 1919 he was convicted under the Espionage Act for his opposition to World War I. Eugene V. Debs credits Berger as the primary influence behind his conversion to socialism. Born in Austria. Buried in Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
