Happy birthday, Hannah Whitall Smith (Feb. 7, 1832 – May 1, 1911)! ‪#‎Suffragist‬. ‪#‎Universalist‬. Temperance activist. Speaker. Writer. Born into a prominent Quaker family. She and her husband settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania in the early 1850s, but by the late 1850s they disassociated themselves from the Quakers to join the Holiness movement. In 1874 Hannah helped organize the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Author of the classic “The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life” (1875) and her autobiography “The Unselfishness of God and How I Discovered It” (1903). The latter book contained chapters on how she became a universalist, though many subsequent printings leave those chapters out. Born in Philadelphia. Died in England.
