Happy birthday, John Hassler Dietrich (Jan. 14, 1878 – July 22, 1957)! ‪#‎Unitarian‬ minister. ‪#‎Humanist‬. Known as the “Father of Religious Humanism.” Grew up in the Reformed Church, and as a young man became minister of St. Mark’s Reformed Church in Pittsburgh. The church thrived under his leadership, but many members were scandalized by his unwillingness to affirm key doctrines. Finally, in 1911, he was defrocked. He then moved to Spokane, Washington, and became minister of the First Unitarian Society. Under his leadership the congregation grew from 60 to 1,500 members in just five years. By then Dietrich was studying Buddha, Confucius, and other sages from outside Christianity. He next moved to Minneapolis and assumed leadership of the First Unitarian Society, where he remained until his retirement. He died in Berkeley, California.
