Quaccheri cristiani ecumenici per fare il bene

On this date in 1577 (Jan. 4th), three ‪#‎Anabaptists‬ were burned at the stake in ‪#‎Antwerp‬, Belgium. Their names were: Hans Bret, Hans Corneliszoon, and Jacques Mergaert. The engraving (by Jan Luiken for Martyrs Mirror) depicts Hans Bret undergoing torture ahead of execution. Before being led to the stake, the executioner attached a tongue screw to Bret’s mouth to prevent him from speaking to the crowd. The screw was recovered from the ashes by Hans de Ries, a prominent Dutch Mennonite leader, and supposedly is still in Mennonite hands in Amsterdam.
