Happy birthday, Jessie Wallace Hughan (Dec. 25, 1875 – April 10, 1955)! ‪#‎Pacifist‬. ‪#‎Suffragist‬. ‪#‎Socialist‬. New York City school teacher. Perennial candidate for political office on the Socialist Party ticket. In 1915, she organized the Anti-Enlistment League in opposition to World War I. In the same year she became a charter member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR). In 1919 her name appeared on a government list of 62 “dangerous radicals.” In 1923 she founded the War Resisters League (WRL). During its early years, the WRL was run from a desk in her living room. As an organizer, her target audiences were young socialists and young Christians. In 1938 she organized an umbrella organization called the United Pacifist Committee. In 1940 she founded the Pacifist Teachers League. She remained active in the War Resisters League as a member of its Executive Committee until her death in 1955.
