Happy birthday, Emma Tenayuca (Dec. 21, 1916 – July 23, 1999)! Labor leader. Union organizer. School teacher. Member of the Communist Party from 1936 to 1946. Arrested many times. In 1938 she led a strike of 12,000 pecan shellers (mostly women) in San Antonio, Texas, which resulted in pay raises for the workers. This strike is considered one of the first significant victories in the struggle of Mexican-Americans for political and economic equality. Buried in Mission Burial Park South, San Antonio, Texas.
