Happy birthday, Grace Paley (Dec. 11, 1922 – Aug. 22, 2007)! #Feminist. #Pacifist. Anti-war activist. War tax resister. Bronx-born. Short story writer. Poet. Teacher. She described herself as a “combative pacifist and cooperative anarchist.” In 1978 she was arrested as one of the “White House Eleven” for unfurling an anti-nuclear banner on the White House lawn. Her New York Times obituary says that, for decades, “she was a familiar presence on lower Sixth Avenue, near her Greenwich Village home, smiling broadly, gum cracking, leaflets in hand.”
