Happy birthday, Jeanne Manford (Dec. 4, 1920 – Jan. 8, 2013)! Queens schoolteacher. Co-founder of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), the largest organization for family members of LGBTQ persons. On June 25, 1972, Jeanne marched in the New York City Gay Pride Parade with her gay activist son, Morty. Jeanne carried a sign that read “Parents of Gays Unite in Support for Our Children.” Her presence as a supportive parent, so rare at that time, generated a wave of enthusiasm within the gay community, and PFLAG was born. The first meeting was held on March 26, 1973 in the Metropolitan-Duane Methodist Church (now the Church of the Village), 7th Avenue and 13th Street. Jeanne is buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens.
