Happy birthday, Isaac Hopper (Dec. 3, 1771 – May 7, 1852)! #Quaker. #Hicksite. #Abolitionist. Active participant in the Underground Railroad. Moved from Philadelphia to New York City in 1829 to manage a Hicksite Quaker bookstore. His abolition activities included hiding fugitive slaves from the police, an activity that tried the patience even of his fellow Quakers. In 1842 he and two other radicals were disowned by the New York Society of Friends. (Forty years later, the New York Yearly Meeting acknowledged regret for this action.) Buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
